When we say ‘body temperature' the term typically talks about the temperature inside our body. Our body temperature depends on various factors including location and time. Normal human body temperature depends a lot on the part of the body from where the temperature is measured. It is also based to some extend on the day and the individuals activity. To put it rightly there is no one single number which can represent a healthy or normal temperature for everyone. The time of day as well as other situations affects our body temperature. The basic human body temperature tends to be the lowest in the second part of the sleep cycle. It can change when an individual is cold, hungry or sleepy. 

Why Is It Essential to Measure Body Temperature 

Medically is it very essential to measure body temperature as there are several diseases that are accompanied with a characteristic change in body temperature. Similarly, some of the ailments can be monitored by keeping track of the body temperature. The ailment can be treated efficiently by evaluating the temperature by the physician. Most often fever is a response to particular disease stimuli. In fact fever is the most frequent sign of a physical ailment in the body. 

Which Is The Best Place To Measure Body Temperature 

Rectal measurement is perhaps the most dependable way of measuring the core body temperature. It is done by placing a thermometer inside the rectum. This is a very accurate measurement is accurate and the normal range is about 36.2°C - 37.7°C. 

Oral measurement is common and can be done by checking the body temperature under the tongue or in the cheek. They undervalue the rectal temperature by roughly 0.3°C - 0.8° C. 

Armpit measurement is about taking the body surface temperature and is done by placing the thermometer in the arm pit or the groin. In this method the limb is pressed to decrease any outside influence on the temperature. In adults this measurement is typically lower compared to the rectal by about 0.5°C to 1.5°C!   

Is The Thermometer Measurement Accurate? 

One has to make a distinction between the accuracy of the thermometer as well as the method of measuring temperature. This can be done under ideal conditions by ensuring that the instruments quality and method of taking temperature.  Even in the best state of art thermometers, accuracy of +/- 0.1°C can be seen.
